Shaftesbury is an unspoilt Saxon market town, set 700 feet up on a hill above the surrounding English countryside with glorious views all around. It is perfectly located for walking, visiting historic villages, exploring the local food produce, as well as days out to the Cotswolds and Bath, the Jurassic coast, Stonehenge and Salisbury or Devon and Dartmoor.
As if the cottage itself were not enough to tempt you to take some time off, a stone’s throw from its doorstep is Cann Mill which produces its own stone-ground flour using a 19th century waterwheel, powered by the river. Within the mill is Panary Bakery which runs craft bread-making courses, ideal for guests staying at Updown Cottage.
A day’s course includes coffee, lunch and all the bread that you can carry but more importantly, all of baker Paul Merry’s enthusiasm, teaching, notes and tips.
Updown Cottage has availability that coincides nicely with bread-making courses in the Autumn:
- 10th – 11th September – 2 day French with sourdough
- 24th September – 1 day Yeast Trio
- 1st October – 1 day French
