How to:... be a star on Mother's Day

4th Mar 16, 1:49 pm

And it’s not too late! (in the UK: Sunday 6th March 2010)

Here are some of the best of the best last minute ideas;

  1. Flowers delivered – always a safe bet for surprise and impact – but you need to act quickly to make the Sunday delivery deadline. *Be sure that the florist you are working with can actually deliver on Sunday in your area.*

Flower Station can deliver FREE SAME DAY if you live in London and order before 6pm, 7 days a week.

They offer a gorgeous, elegant white and white hand-tie, and at only £24.99 – we honestly don’t know how they do it. With freesias, white roses, crane brassica, snapdragons, as well as lush green foliage it’s sophisticated and has the ‘wow’.

  1. Afternoon tea out – just you and she – devote all your attention to her for extra brownie points.

It’s not time to be counting the cost either. Full marks for picking The Lanesborough where Afternoon Tea is served from 3pm – 4.30pm in either Céleste or The Withdrawing Room.

The menus range £48 to £65 per head, with fizz and an impressive selection of teas and finger food.

Hurry there are only a few tables left: BOOK ONLINE HERE.

  1. Have it at home in a hamper

If she’s not quite up to a schlep into town, here’s a wonderful solution.

Good old Fortnum and Mason have the perfect Champagne Afternoon Tea Hamper at £140, available for delivery on Sunday (add £7.95).

Presented in Fortnum’s famous traditional wicker, includes a choice of teas and a tea strainer of course, a bottle of Champagne, Dundee Cake, Strawberry & Champagne Preserves, plus a tin of Darjeeling Tea Biscuits. For a spot of afternoon reading by the fire, they have also included a book about tea in this extensive hamper. Add fresh cream and scones and you’re all set.

If when it comes to Afternoon tea, your mother prefers things a bit simpler, an ideal option might be Betty’s Mother’s Day Gift Selection at £25.00 + £10.95 for Saturday delivery (though delivery is in a 3-5 day window so you might need to make a few excuses if you’re running late).

Includes Simnel Fruit Cake Portion, Chocolate & Vanilla Biscuits, Bettys Mug and Tea Room Blend Tea Bags. To make it even more special you might decide to throw in a Bettys Bettys keepsake cake tin at (.99 in case she can’t eat it all in one sitting, or a Teatime at Bettys tea cosy at £45.

  1. Breakfast in bed – delivered to her door

If Mum loves her petit dejeuner and resides in throwing distance of Ladbroke Grove (to be precise W9, W10, W11, SW8 and some of W2, NW6, NW10, SW1, SW4, SW11 & SW3 postcodes) – you can order from Breakfast in Bed where it’s possible to pick her favourites from an online menu with delicious sounding options ranging from a healthy smoothie to ‘The Works’ butty, and even include The Sunday Times.

B in bed

FREE delivery over £8, and if you really didn’t remember it was Mother’s Day before you woke up on the morning, they can even deliver within 25 minutes of receiving your order (or at your specified delivery time between 8am and 3pm).

They will be round with your Mum’s breakfast on a Vespa – so better let her know to have her dressing gown at the ready to answer the door.

  1. Deliver a relaxing bath – the thoughtful one

A bit more co-ordination required from you – but knock her socks off with a surprise arrival from you ready to run her a hot bath, with a basket of bath goodies at the ready;

– include a bubble bath to match her favourite perfume: for example:

…White Musk box of treats from The Body Shop £6 – including a crinkle bath lily

…Chanel No5 foaming bath – £40 at John Lewis

– a new fluffy dressing gown – here are 10 of the best as recommended by The Independent

327640 CK robe

– a chilled bottle of her favourite wine, glass and bath wine glass holder to safely suction the glass to the side of the bath:

£6.95 from Handpicked Collection

Run the tub, pick a fluffy towel, put it on the radiator, spread out the bath mat, put on the radio and leave her to wallow in the joy of all your thoughtfulness.

  1. Splurge – she’s worth it

The Tiffany Cocktail watch, in 18k white gold, Pavé dial and black satin strap with diamond buckle.

Definitely a splurge at £17,900, but fortunately Tiffany stores are aplenty around the UK and a dash-in-dash-out purchase is not beyond the realms of possibility. (Make a call first to make sure they have one in stock at the store you plan to go to.)

A thing of exquisite beauty, she will think of you each time she dares look at it.

Dartington Crystal RHS Gallery Blackberries bowl – £450.

A centre piece that will be admired by all who visit her home. You might just make the 48 hour express delivery if you act quickly.

Aspinal Signature Shield Silk Scarf – Alabaster – £95

Soft, elegant and beautiful like your Mum, a tactile gift she will love every time it’s close.

This is an in-store purchase to make it on time so be ready to hit the shops.

Of course Mum deserves treats throughout the year and any of these could apply any time – being impulsive and spoiling her for no reason says it all.

Another in our ‘How to make a difference’ series.
